LB So what does real mutual aid and Big Society look like? Or radical mutual aid?

DG I think we know. I mean we do it all the time. It's recognising the forms of imminent communism as being values in themselves rather than simply being valuable to maintain the platform from which people can then extract profit.

Interview with David Graeber, AutoItalia 2010
As part of LuckyPDF/AutoltaliaLive episode 5, THBTP wash and cut David Graeber's hair, while asking about anarchism, mutual aid and prefigurative politics.

"We're often told an employment contract is an agreement between two equal parties, but it really isn't. Employers have the strength, and the only strength we have as workers is collective strength. Thats not about being out on strike all the time, but withdrawing our labour is not only a human right, it's our strongest weapon, it's the time when we step out of our subservient roles - being the people who are told what to do, and saying, actually today we are in charge, and we're deciding what we do - and what we're doing this morning is coming out on the picket line and later out on a demonstration with thousands I hope, of civil servants, teachers, demonstrating to show we're not prepared to sit down simply to let our public services and pensions be destroyed"

J30, Solidarity with National Union of Teachers, 2011

THBTP set up salons at schools and university pickets within the borough of Tower Hamlets, London in support of teachers striking against pension cuts. Each person was asked what collective action against austerity measures might look like.</description>

26-28 Toynbee Street, E1
1st July - 29th October 2010

The salon opened as part of the 2Degrees Festival of art and politics, responding to climate change and crisis in financial and political systems, and went continued over a 6 month period.

Toynbee Street Salon offered free haircuts, popular education events and a library. The salon was designed around poltics of commons and questions of post-Party radical politics.

During the 6 months many people came through the salon and shared their stories, ambitions, concerns, strategies, critiques and creativity. Through the barbers chair, we attempted to provide a continuity across differing experiences and affinities between separate networks.

The salon provides the core of our hairdressing experience, with over 600 people training us on the specifics of how they want their hair cut. See the portfolio page for past and recent cuts.
